In the past, I've complained about government entities as much as the next person, but I'm leaning more and more to a more progressive way of thinking. There are very few, if any, perfect organizations, corporations, etc.. Even the ones considered near perfect by some are considered the opposite by others. My thought is that if you don't like the way things are run by one of these entities, JOIN it! Improvements (and a better understanding) can be easier from within. I have a friend in San Francisco whom I always thought was pretty anti-authority, yet just told me they want to be a cop. After my initial surprise I realized that this person would make a great cop, and that if more of the people I admire and care about - the heroes of my world - were "running the show," then to me, this could be a perfect world.
The USCG needs more people who understand the concerns of those of us who live and work on the sea.
